Volcano Eruption Chemistry

Students mix baking soda and vinegar to create a chemical reaction, learning about acids, bases, and gas production.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Set up your volcano

    Place the plastic cup in the center of the tray. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup. If using food coloring, add a few drops now.

    Make a prediction

    Ask students: What do you think will happen when we add vinegar? Have them draw or write their prediction in their science journal.

    Add the vinegar

    Slowly pour the vinegar into the cup. Observe the reaction together. Encourage students to describe what they see, hear, and feel (bubbles, fizzing, foam).

    Record observations

    Students draw and write what happened in their science journal. Prompt them: What did you see? Was your prediction correct?

    Discuss and connect

    Explain that vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base. When they meet, they produce carbon dioxide gas — that's the bubbles! Connect to real-world examples like volcanoes and baking.
