Rube Goldberg Machine

Teams design a chain-reaction machine using household materials to complete a simple task.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Watch and wonder

    Show a short video of a Rube Goldberg machine. Ask: What do you notice? How many steps did it take? What was the final task?

  2. 2

    Define the task

    Each team's machine must complete a simple task: knock over a cup, ring a bell, or drop a ball into a container. Teams choose their task and write it on their planning sheet.

  3. 3

    Plan your machine

    Teams sketch a diagram showing at least 4 steps in their chain reaction. They label each step and the materials needed. Allow 15 minutes for planning.

  4. 4

    Build and test

    Teams build their machine and test each step individually before connecting them. Encourage iteration — if a step doesn't work, adjust and try again. Allow 40 minutes.

  5. 5

    Full run and showcase

    Each team demonstrates their complete machine for the class. Celebrate every attempt — partial success counts! Discuss what worked, what didn't, and what they'd change.
